The fund was set up by the Association many years ago to help players suffering financial hardship as a result of injuries sustained whilst playing football. It is not an insurance scheme but it can offer help to all involved in the game who have become incapacitated and in need of temporary financial assistance. This is a vital source of help given to players and is always welcomed at those times when serious injuries, such as a broken leg, prevent them from working and being able to provide for their families.
The Swain Benevolent Fund is a way in which football can support injured players in a meaningful way and therefore we are asking clubs and Leagues to make a donation to help us improve the balances of the fund to ensure we can continue to give this valuable support to those seriously injured during matches.
During the past few seasons, the awarding of grants (up to £500 dependant on need) has not been matched by the income from donations and the balances held by the fund are falling at a rate that will see it depleted within the next few seasons. Should the needs of players increase it may even be sooner.
With over 600 clubs and leagues in the county, a donation of just £10 from each body will lift the fund substantially and help us give the support where and when it is most needed. Of course higher donations would be most welcome and help us make the fund even healthier. Your generosity in supporting the fund will enable us to be even more generous in our assistance to those in need. Regretfully, awards from the fund can only be given to participants whose club or league has made a donation in the season of application.
A number of clubs and leagues regularly support the fund and we would like to thank them for doing so.
