Northampton Town Claim Inaugural Walking Football County Cup

A fantastic display of Walking Football was on show at our first-ever Walking Football County Cup on Saturday (23 February), with Northampton Town claiming the title after a penalty shoot-out victory over Birmingham Walking Football Club Whites.

Taking place at Goals Northampton as part of this year’s FA People’s Cup, the event illustrated how the provision and popularity of Walking Football has increased significantly throughout the county in recent times, with 10 of the 13 teams participating being from Northamptonshire.

Following the knockout stages, five Northamptonshire sides made it to the quarter-final, and - with external county team West End FC forfeiting the competition - one of Moulton’s teams received a BYE into the semi-final stages, where they went up against Northampton Town.

The People’s Cup semi-final doubled up as the County Cup Final, with Northampton Town coming out on top and going through to the final against a strong Birmingham Walking Football Club Whites side, who had dominated the earlier rounds.

Full time came and the two teams were tied, meaning the winner would be decided with a penalty shootout. Northampton Town took the lead and went on to win following a spectacular series of great saves from the Northampton Town goalkeeper.

Northampton Town now go through to the next phase of the FA People’s Cup with the crown of Walking Football County Cup Final champions!

Northamptonshire FA would like to congratulate Northampton Town on their victory and thank Goals Northampton for hosting the event and supporting Northants FA on the day.
