Club History...
Daventry Town Football Club is a club that has risen from the ashes. The club - formed in 1886 - has witnessed a chequered history over the years, including a devastating fire in 2005 which threatened the club's future.
Up to the Sixties the team consisted mainly of players from the town. The club played in the Northampton Town League and found life at times difficult as their rivals Long Buckby and British Timken led the way at the higher reaches of the Daventry area football league. Ford Sports was also emerging too as a force to be reckoned with.
But under the guidance of successful manager Willie Barrett in the 1987/88 season the club's fortunes began to change. Switching to the Northants Combination, his side duly won promotion to the Premier after taking the Division One title. In 1988/89 they won the Premier title and secured promotion to the United Counties Division One also winning league cups. Town went on to win the UCL Division One title in 1989/90 and were runners-up in the Junior Cup and they followed this up with similar success the following season.
Much has happened at the club since those heady days, including a move from the Hollow playing fields to their new home at the Elderstubbs.
Town won promotion again in 2000/1 season but the club's fortunes was to take a dramatic turn for the worse in September 2005 when a fire at the club's Elderstubbs base gutted the premises. The ferocious blaze gutted the facility which cost many thousands of pounds to build in the early 1990s. Club officials were left to count the long-term cost of the horrific blaze. It was another massive setback for the town club which had been involved in protracted negotiations with landowners Daventry District Council over rent demands and rent arrears.
With the club facing an uncertain future, mobile phone company Shebang Distribution stepped in to offer the club a financial lifeline. New personnel including Chairman Iain Humphrey and Secretary Matt Hogsden took the helm. Work began to revitalise the club with an introduction of new floodlights, walkways and other such infrastructure to support the clubs promotion ambitions. More importantly the club introduced female and junior soccer, putting in a structure of football for everyone and quickly becoming recognised by the FA as a Community Standard Club. With a new name for their ground - 'Communications Park' - ambitious chairman Iain Humphrey revealed plans for a £400,000 clubhouse. The blueprint includes viewing balconies and conference facilities, corporate rooms, bar, changing rooms and treatment area, manager's office and patio-barbecue area.
The club now consists of 19 teams with players as young as five. A great team of coaches has come on board which is ever growing as the teams continue to expand. The hard work by everyone is echoed by the clubs current success and as a new season kicks off, the future looks rosy for the Town club which really can claim to have risen from the ashes!
