FA County Youth Cup
Northamptonshire FA made the very long journey to Somerset for their first round cup tie at Somerset on Saturday 30 September 2017, and after a five-hour journey eventually arrived at Frome Town FC to prepare for the 3pm kick-off.
Northants started brightly and had an early chance but Somerset came into the game as the half progressed. The two teams were evenly matched and both sides had chances to take the lead. A great opportunity fell to Somerset when they were awarded a penalty, but the Northants ‘keeper - Jonathan Thick - produced a great save.
The game was held up for a lengthy period for an unfortunate injury to Northants defender Nial Burnage, who fell awkwardly and had to be replaced. This injury was subsequently confirmed as a very unfortunate ankle fracture - we wish him a speedy recovery and a quick return to action.
As the first half went on both sides had chances, but good saves from both ‘keepers kept the scores level.
HALF TIME 0-0
It was a case of as you were at the start of second half, until Northants broke the deadlock with a quality goal from number three, Dante Memoli. It was a great strike from all of 30 yards which flew into the top corner, giving the Somerset ‘keeper no chance.
Northants took control after that and their attacking play was awarded when the referee awarded another penalty when Ben Fitzjohn was brought down. Ben got up, dusted himself down and slotted the ball home to make it 2-0 to Northants, booking his side a place in the next round away to Hertfordshire FA.
It was an entertaining contest and a credit to both teams. The game was played in the right spirit and was a great advert for County Representative football. Both counties can be proud of themselves.
Thanks to Somerset for their wonderful hospitality and warm welcome on the day.
