Northants FA Backing the Three Lions!
World Cup fever is sweeping across the nation, as – for the first time ever – England won a World Cup penalty shoot-out against Colombia on Tuesday night to set up a mouth-watering quarter-final clash with Sweden.
The tournament’s leading goalscorer, Harry Kane, gave England the lead from the penalty spot in the 57th minute inside Spartak Stadium, but Yerry Mina’s 93rd-minute equaliser forced extra-time and the dreaded shoot-out.
Jordan Henderson saw his effort saved by David Ospina, but after Mateus Uribe hit the bar, Kieran Trippier found the top corner, Jordan Pickford saved from Carlos Bacca and then Eric Dier stepped up to slide home the winning kick.
This was the Three Lions' first win in the knockout stages of a major tournament since the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but attention now turns to Saturday’s quarter-final at the Samara Arena, where Gareth Southgate and his players have the opportunity to write even more history.
The game will kick-off at 15:00 BST, live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio 5 live and BBC Sport online.
Northamptonshire FA would like to join the nation in wishing Gareth and his whole squad the very best of luck for Saturday’s quarter-final. Come on England!
